TK-5 Class Descriptions 2023-2024

Welcome to the 2023-24 School Year! All classes are 50 EU’s unless noted in the description. The class schedule is designed for TK-5 students to request one class.  Please be aware of this as you are requesting classes for the fall.  Thank you!

Monday Classes:

2nd Math & Writing Fun 

Monday 9:30-11:15 

Through various games, activities, and number puzzles, students will be encouraged to develop critical thinking skills amidst the problem-solving process. Small group and partner work will lay the foundation for many of the investigations, as students engage with questions that challenge their thinking and cause them to justify their reasoning!  Your child will spend the year learning to be a writer through journaling, composing paragraphs, and fun writing projects! 

TK-K Learning Through Literature 

Monday 9:30-11:15 

Welcome to TK-K Learning Through Literature! Your child will spend the year immersed in spectacular books from Blueberries for Sal to The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Each of these books will inspire a thematic learning experience full of songs, games, and crafts. 

1st Math & Writing Fun 

Monday 9:30-11:15

Welcome to 1st Grade Math and Writing!  In this class your child will spend the year learning to build writing and mathematical skills through group interactions and individual activities. The year will encompass sight word songs, beginning journaling, math based stories and games, and mini math lessons based on concepts from assessment content and the 1st grade California state standards.  Students will also experience what it’s like to be in a classroom setting with their peers. 

3rd Math & Writing Fun 

Monday 9:30-11:15

Welcome to 3rd Grade Math & Writing Fun! This class will provide students with the opportunity to explore foundational 3rd grade math concepts through stories, games, and small group challenges.  Our primary focus in math will be on learning and understanding the concepts of multiplication and division, as well as developing fact fluency.  In writing, students will learn how to develop a well-organized paragraph, they will conduct a research report on an animal of their choice, and they will participate in the always-popular Flat Stanley project!  

TK-1 Science and Outdoor Nature

Monday 9:30-11:15

This is an exciting outdoor class, so please have your student dress for the weather! Books are the launch pad to propel us to outdoor exploration of birds, clouds, bugs, plants, animals, and the world around us. We will often get messy with hands-on activities. Students learn important applicable vocabulary. This is an Outdoor Class, braving all kinds of weather, so students should always be geared-up and ready for the appropriate weather of the day. Send your child with a mat or beach towel to sit on during class. You will sign a field trip form since we frequently walk to the amazing tree farm behind the CORE TK8 Center. Please send a snack with your child. (Please let us know if your child has food sensitivities or allergies.)

4-5 Art through History

Monday 9:30-11:15

This class will have fun learning about historical figures and events, while exploring various art mediums, techniques, and design projects that will showcase each student’s learning of art through history! 

4-5 Math & Writing Fun 

Monday 11:30-1:15

Through various games, activities, and number puzzles, students will be encouraged to develop critical thinking skills amidst the problem-solving process. We will work independently, in small groups as well as partner work as we collaborate and learn to use evidence to justify our thinking.  Your child will utilize the google suite as he/she spends the year learning to be a confident writer through journaling, dissecting the grammar of sentences, composing strong paragraphs, and using research to create fun writing projects! 

TK-1 Science and Outdoor Nature

2-3 Exploration into C-STEM and STEM

Monday 11:30-1:15

This class will provide your student with fun and creative ways to use computers and to work on completing STEM challenges! They will grow in the areas of computing, science, technology, engineering, and math education (C-STEM). The goal is to create a learning environment for students to have digital citizenship, basic computer operating skills, coding (using websites and apps), practice keyboarding skills, and use critical thinking to solve problems and design.

2-3 Junior Scholars

Monday 12:30-1:15

Come, jump in with us as we explore all the possibilities! We will cover a wide variety of topics with an emphasis on science, writing, and major math concepts. Students will complete group projects, play games, learn songs, and gain exposure to a variety of skills which will help them to succeed at home. These jr. scholars will be masters of making keen observations and explaining their understanding with words, diagrams, and 3D models. Buckle up for an exciting smörgåsbord of learning!

3-5 G-R-I-T (Growth- Resilience- Integrity… Together)

Monday 1:30-3:15

Calling all 3rd-5th graders! Join us for games, crafts, and mind benders as we collaboratively build a toolkit to navigate challenges and build character. Through visual metaphors and hands-on activities, we will explore problem-solving and resilience skills together! Come join the fun!

4-5 Exploration into C-STEM Robotics

Monday 1:30-3:15

With the use of robotics (Lego WeDo) this class grows the students capacity for creativity and fun by teaching computing, science, technology, engineering, and math education (CSTEM). The goal is to create a learning environment for students to build, program, and explore according to certain specifications using learned concepts and skills from CSTEM. Students solve a task by using the 'Design Process' to identify and investigate, create and implement, and then test and improve. Students then follow-up the process with an explanation of the solution. Desired outcomes for students are to develop Creativity, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving skills, Communication and Collaboration, and to teach new technology skills that can be applied in a variety of settings.

4-5 Project-Based Learning 

Monday 1:30-3:15

Students will learn how to engage their own interests and become researchers. Students will be guided through the process of crafting a driving question and producing an appropriate "product" to demonstrate their learning. Students will be able to discover more about their learning style and discover the vast array of options to demonstrate their learning. Let's get creative!

2-3 Spanish  

Wednesday 9:30-11:15

Through an exploration of songs, art, and games, students will engage in collaborative activities that develop Spanish conversational skills! Students of any linguistic background are welcome to participate as we learn through lessons that encourage curiosity and expand linguistic abilities!

TK Tiny Adventures 

Wednesday 9:30-11:15

Welcome to TK Tiny Adventures! Hooray for your first center class. In Tiny Adventures your child will have fun experiences doing sensory play, art, games and songs. The focus will be cooperative play, experiential learning and having fun. 

K-1st Adventures in Art and Music

In this K-1st Adventures in Art and Music center class, students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of creative art projects based on a theme for each class session. The theme will center around a story that corresponds with the time of year, season, holiday or event throughout the year. To go along with the theme there will usually be a song, movement activity, math and/or language arts page. Students will not only get the chance to interact with their peers, they will also experience what it’s like to be in a classroom setting.

4-5 Art and Science 

Wednesday 9:30-11:15

Calling all artists and lovers of science! In this class we will be exploring the concepts of science through different art mediums. We will investigate science topics through literature books, videos, direct drawings, nature walks, and hands-on art projects. We will be compiling an interactive science and nature journal throughout the year and merging science and art together through different units of study.

*You will sign a field trip form since we will walk to the amazing tree farm behind the CORE TK8 Center from time to time for our lessons. Please send a snack with your child for our short break.

2-3 Movement and Journaling

Wednesday 11:30-1:15

Studies show that movement can boost student creativity and learning outcomes. In this class, students will participate in intentional physical activity that focuses on bilateral movement, collaboration, and gross motor development. During the second half of class, we will move into the writing portion of the class. If your student is a reluctant writer or enjoys creative writing, this class will be a great fit! The writing portion of our class will focus on making writing feel fun and digestible for students.

TK-K Messy Math and Wild Writing 

Wednesday 11:30-1:15

TK/K Messy Math Wild Writing is an exciting outdoor class. We use nature to learn about ELA and Math concepts, such as letter formation, adding, letter sounds, symmetry, etc. This is an Outdoor Class, braving all kinds of weather, so students are to be geared-up and ready for the outside, dressed for the appropriate weather of that day. Send your child with a backpack, mat, pad, or beach towel to sit on during class, a snack or lunch, and water that he/she is able to open on his/her own. (Please let me know if your child has food sensitivities or allergies.)

1st Math & Writing Fun 

Wednesday 11:30-1:15

Welcome to 1st writing and math! Your child will spend the year learning to be a writer and get to experience mathematical concepts in a group as well as through individual activities. The year will encompass sight word songs and beginning journaling. Along with this will be mini math lessons, games, and stories. Students will also learn how to be part of a classroom community.

4-5 Math and Writing Through Technology 

Wednesday 11:30-1:15

Welcome to 4th and 5th grade math and writing through technology! Your child will spend the year learning to be a more well-rounded writer and get to experience mathematical concepts. We will utilize Google Classroom in order to access math resources & activities as well as partner and group games. Students will rotate through small groups each week being able to work closely with me on their writing and notebooking skills, simultaneously building their skills working independently and collaboratively during centers. Students will become familiar with routines using MathReps, Gimkit and Google Slides. Please send a snack with your child for our short break.
